I recently went to see a very experienced and very well regarded dermatologist, to tell him about our products for the treatment of Psoriasis, Eczema and Rosacea. He very kindly told me that by the time patients get referred to them, they would have been prescribed a range of topical steroidal products and their condition is usually quite severe.
He went on to say that their condition would usually range from moderate to severe and the options would usually be oral corticosteroids, such as Dexamethasone or the next level drugs: Methotrexate and then Biologics.
Methotrexate is a drug that is generally used to treat cancer of breast, skin, head, neck and lungs. Methotrexate is usually given after other drugs have been tried and failed. You can see the long list of side effects for Methotrexate by doing a Google search.
Biologics are antibodies raised against proteins, usually and in the case of autoimmune skins conditions, which include Psoriasis, Eczema, Rosacea etc, certain proteins that are part of the immune response, such as TNF (Tumour Necrosis Factor) or interleukins (IL), which are immune mediators and are part of the immune response. These antibodies would react with and neutralize these proteins and the patients generally respond and get better. It should be noted, that after a while, your immune system gets used to them and the biologics stop working as well. You might be moved on to another biologic, but that has its own issues. The list of side effects associated with biologics are fairly minor things such as, flue like symptoms, minor infections, nausea, diarrhea etc., but then there are the rare side effects, that you are sure would not affect you, which include severe infection and cancer and even death; that scares the hell out of me.
I mentioned all these side effects to my dermatologist colleague and he said that the benefit of these drugs outweighs the side effects, which are generally tolerated and acceptable. Here I am trying to tell a really experienced Dermatologist, that we have products that do not have side effects and work really well, but it is falling on deaf ears.
